All images are in the root of uploads folder

Hello all,

I am sure there must be some threads about this but I could not find. So I am sorry for a probable repeat post.

I am currently applying a new theme for a wordpress website, and I realized somehow they uploaded all the images directly to the root of uploads folder. There is no classic wp hierarchy of date and time at all. And it’s a big website, there are about 280,000 images in the upload folder. I don’t know how or why they did that. Also they are not even aware of this situation.

I found some plugins, claiming to solve this problem but 280k of images is a huge number. What do you think I should do? Leave it as it is, or try to fix it.

And anyone with the same problem, how did you fix it?
