Post & email vs Post only

Hi, I’ve read your help materials and searched the forum but am still confused about the difference between the “Post & email” and “Post only” options under Newsletter in the Publish menu. If I choose “Post only”, what happens? Do all subscribers receive notice that I’ve published? That’s what I want. I don’t want to send the essay as an email to subscribers.
