Can’t change search bar colour/background

Hope someone can help. I’ve tried several ways to change the background/text color of the search block:

Nothing works. When I add the additional css class I don’t see it appear anywhere in the published page. However when I open dev tools and add background-color etc that way it displays fine. I’ve tried deactivating plug ins and doing the same on a different site (I’m using cwicly theme on this one)
